Job Description: 

Position Summary:

  • The Senior Network Engineer will propose, develop, test, and implement systems supporting the creation, expansion, performance, and stability of the voice and data networks and the network security of Client. The role is responsible for new product evaluation, small (single device) to medium-scale (building) equipment builds and configuration, field installation, and short-term support of new devices. The role provides support to the Network convergence architects in enterprise wide deployment and large-scale (multi-building or user impacting) projects and to the Network Moves/Adds/Changes team in support of layer 2 through 5 implementation issues they encounter. Additionally, the role is a third-tier support for network device problems as escalated from tier two personnel.
  •  The role is responsible for ensuring interoperable wired/wireless LAN using open standards, strategic analysis, and implementation of enterprise unified architecture which integrates voice, data and video communications technologies over wired and wireless communications mediums. Implement network solutions that comply with industry standards, generally accepted business practices, Client policies and Client customer service level expectations; Through collaborative work with the Security teams this role is responsible for the seamless integration of all network devices types to ensure that data protection solutions do not impact customer experience while still providing a high level of access and data protection over wired and wireless services.
  •  To meet the responsibilities of this role, strong technical expertise in the production use of the following technologies is critical to implement validated and tested solutions for voice, video and critical data over Clients LAN, WAN, WLAN, and VPN networks: protocols such as IP Multicast, VRF-lite, End-to-End QoS (Quality of Service), BGP (Border Gateway Protocol) and OSPF (Open Shortest Path First); connectivity methods over copper, coaxial, fiber, wireless, and cellular using technologies such as SONET (Synchronous Optical Network), and DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing).

Key Responsibilities:

Research And Development:

  • Researching and evaluating next generation network technologies for possible use
  • Meeting with peer organizations and vendors to discuss solutions in play at other institutes
  • Utilizing the test lab to do extensive product and solution testing and evaluation for multiple vendors; defining test and pilot approaches, including measurable outcomes; and providing written analysis of results tied to alternatives and recommendations.
  • Propose strategies for improving networks through integration of new products and services
  • Build project proposals with associated bill of materials and estimated manpower requirements to implement new technologies or improve existing infrastructure
  • Creating, evaluating, and writing procedures
  • Collaborate with Network Architects in design efforts on large projects as well as enterprise wide information technology initiatives.
  • Capacity Planning and Risk Management

Network Design, Implementation, And Change:

  • Building and installing complex enterprise data network devices in a complex and diverse environment in support of a series of local and wide-area networks spanning the San Francisco metropolitan area and beyond as required for university business
  • Participating in  implementation and deployment efforts on large projects as well as enterprise wide information technology initiatives
  • Writing detailed project design, specification, implementation, test, and support documents
  • Documenting network topologies, devices, and configurations for enterprise wide communications initiatives
  • Participation in change management process

Collaboration And Communications:

  • Collaborating with Medical Center, campus departments and CENIC to ensure that campus network connectivity is operating as designed
  • Functioning as a liaison in the area of high performance redundant networks to collaborate with engineers from other IT functions on solution development projects
  • Working collaboratively as a member to meet goals on schedule.
  • Providing training and mentorship to peers and junior network and information security staff

Network diagramming documentation skills with the ability to present to non-technical audiences

Understanding and hands on experience with network device management technologies (HTTPS, ssh, SNMP) and the tools used for management (HP Openview, MRTG, CiscoWorks)

Ability to work days, evenings, and weekends as required: 24x7 support
